I don't know what makes my hatred so strong toward dogs (and all
pets for that matter) but it is not a tick above loathe on the richter scale. I can't even trace it back to a bad memory. I just, vehemently don't like them. Maybe it is because my grandmother's dog made a beeline for me in the rain with his muddy paws and ruined my shirt. Maybe it's because they ALWAYS smell bad and their teeth are almost always covered in enough plaque to butter a piece of toast. I am guessing it is all of the above.

Maybe it's because they ALWAYS smell bad and their teeth are almost always covered in enough plaque to butter a piece of toast. I am guessing it is all of the above.I even have children who smell, drool, barf and poop on the floor, sometimes, but at least they eventually take care of themselves and can carry a conversation.
Whenever there is a dog around I can tolerate it but I can barely bring myself to reach out my hand to show my "compassion." I think their fur is coarse and I end up with a handful of it when I pull away. Who wants that? I have come home from activities, covered in dog hair and I never even saw a dog. Dog hair stays around for a long time. I even find dog hair in unbelievable places like my toothbrush and attached to my contact. What?
So, now you know. Neighbors, friends, I am sorry if I have offended you. I try my best to be cordial but I really don't want to hold your dog. And when you say it is friendly, I don't want to be licked to prove it. I HATE dog slobber even more than I hate dogs. I don't want to dance, pet or play fetch with the nasty drool covered ball. So, there have been a few instances where your dog has just sat on my lap and not moved and that has been fine but if I have to pet it, forget it.
I don't have a lot of love for anything that walks on all fours for longer than a couple of months. Forgive me, I was born with it and I don't see it changing anytime soon.
So if you are wondering if I will watch your dog while you are on vacation, the answer is, if it is in an urn, I would be happy to.

That's exactly why I like you. I'm SO the SAME! Poor Aaron grew up with like 5 dogs at a time and just adores dogs...as do my kiddos...! Yikes! It won't ever happen in our household though...trust me, I'll be "allergic" to them suddenly too.
I think I always saw you as more of a cat or snake lover instead of dogs. Just tell people your deathly allergic to anything that lives besides humans. I won't get a pet because my excuse is I already have enough people to clean up after as it is. I like dogs, just as long as they're not mine!
Hi Rachel,
I'm Lynn Atwood's daughter, Linda, and she told me you had a cute blog that her and Dennis enjoy..and since I recently started my own, I thought I'd check it out. I loved this post about your "love-affair" with dogs-ha-ha! I can totally relate! During the first 15 years of our marriage, I wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with them. We even had to keep (more like store to me) my mother-in-law's dog for 5 years. I NEVER fed it, pet it, let it in the house..you get the picture. I told my husband, Ron, that it was his "baby"! My daughter Rachel, had a dog walking business where she walked everyone in the neighborhoods dog, just to spite me for being so mean and not allowing her to have her OWN dog after the dreaded mother-in-law's dog moved back with her. BUT ONE DAY....my husband brought home a dog for our kids. I was HORRIFIED! Not to mention it was during a time when we were moving and in-between houses which was a 7 week period of homelessness. I had never been more ganged up on in my life!! Well 6 years later we now own 3 dogs! There's hair, slobber and vet bills, but something changed in me that I'll never be able to explain! To see the joy they bring to my kids is worth EVERYTHING that I used to loathe! My dogs are great! I told Ron who converted to the church about 4 years ago..that I converted too.. so now we're even-HA!! Good Luck!
